Kinja'd!!!

Hi Guys,
My 2012 Ford Mustang is currently at Riverhead Ford, where it has been undergoing its second manual transmission rebuild for the last 8 weeks. Yes 8 weeks.

TL/DR: I may need someone with a Manual 2011-2014 GT to bring their car to Riverhead Ford in Long Island on Friday 6/5/2015 as a comparison to show they did not fix my transmission right. If you are available, let me know in the comments. There is lunch in it for you. Thanks.

A little back story; Last September, all of the gears in my 2012 GT manual starting screaming. This in combination with the fact that it was incredibly hard to shift into second gear (The shifter physically catches something... not skip shift... and won’t let you into gear unless you jam it in), made me bring the car in for service. I brought the car back to the dealership I purchased it from; Riverhead Ford in Long Island. Riverhead, for reference is 100 miles from my house in Staten Island, but up until now, they have always treated me well. Riverhead decided the transmission needed a rebuild. Due to part back orders, the repair took 42 days leading basically into November 2014.

Upon picking up the car, I noted that second gear still didn’t feel right. However, I was told to drive the car for a little and let everything break in... fine I’ll deal.

I drive the car for about 1000 miles (enough to break in a new clutch that Riverhead installed) when I begin to smell oil. I brought the car to my local Staten Island dealership (Dana Ford) to find that my cylinder head is cracked. Ford replaced the cylinder head, but that repair meant the car was out of commission for another 2 weeks. For those of you counting, we are up to 8 weeks at this point. I also ask Dana to take a look at the transmission as well because I still do not like the way it is shifting. Dana comes back and says nothing is wrong. However, when I found a used 2011 with a manual on their lot and made them compare the two, they did agree that mine did not feel right. Alas, they refused to work on the car because Riverhead was the last dealership to do warranty work on the transmission, which meant that if it was assembled wrong, Dana would not be able to bill Ford.... which is why the car is back at Riverhead.

So now it has been ADDITIONAL 8 weeks. The transmission parts were supposedly available when I brought it in, meaning that the transmission would be rebuilt again instead of replaced. However, this was wrong and the parts were back ordered to the vendor with no arrival date. In the meantime, after two weeks of trying to get in touch with the regional manager Rita (with no call back), I did request a new transmission, though I am told none are available. Fast forward 6 weeks and the parts arrive but the technician who was to assemble it had health problems and could not assemble it. The dealership then sent it to a transmission shop and is now supposed to have the whole car ready for me this Friday, 6/5/2015.

Honestly, I want this ordeal to be over. I also refuse to leave the dealership if the transmission does not feel right. I’ve already told the dealership and Ford customer service that I will not take the car if I cannot get into second gear cleanly. If this happens, I want a new transmission; no more rebuilds.

So Back to the favor: Since Riverhead is small, they do not have a large used car inventory. If anyone with a GT manual is in the area, I am requesting the possibility to bring the car by as a comparison if I have trouble. All I want them to do is shift the gears in yours vs mine. I’ll buy you lunch if you come out. Let me know in the comments if you can help. Thank you.

-Rob

My initial thought is that rebuilding the same transmission again is not going to work. They should put in a new one.

This car right here is absolutely beautiful! I love the Shelby wheels and they’re a great addition to the 5.0

Logic need not apply apparently. Like I said though, I won’t take the car unless its fixed.

Doubt it. I have an early-2000’s Honda V6 transmission.

I can’t really help you in the car department…

But to show the dealer how useless a rebuild is, take an ECU from a mechanic’s car, dunk it in water, plug it back in, and tell them to rebuild it until it works properly. It won’t. And then tell them to give you a whole new transmission.

A long time ago I had an ‘88 Toyota Camry wagon where 2nd gear fell out about 1000 miles out of warranty. After proving to them that I could drive a stick, they grudgingly agreed, after much persuasion, to pay for half the rebuild. Then I went to law school - the offers for that car came fast and furious. I hope it’s still running somewhere.

Sorry to hear about your experience. I hope that you are able to have this issue effectively resolved very soon.

However, if you are not able to find someone to help you this evening, you should probably repost this tomorrow so that the morning crowd can see it and hopefully help.

Call Ford USA. Be calm, but very stern. I’m not a Ford guy, so I have zero contacts within the blue oval, but be very persistent, and the best advice (in the words of my coworker) is to simply say “I’m not satisfied with this service.” And continue saying that until you get someone who goes beyond telling you what you want to hear and skips straight to doing what needs to be done in order to rectify the situation.

Also tell Ford that you’re so dissatisfied with the service you’re currently getting from the dealer, you want your car removed from their service department and taken to a competent shop that will properly fix the car.

Sound angry, but avoid the four letter words.

There’s also nothing worse to a company like Ford than hearing that you’re disappointed in the product, and this experience will certainly affect your decision to purchase another product from them.

Document everything, ask for names, phone numbers and when to expect a return call. Make sure they are well aware of you keeping on top of this.

Sorry, I’m up in Westchester and can’t get out east 90% of the time. Did you get your car back yet?

I have a 14 with 46k miles and I haven’t had any problems with the trans yet, but I have plenty complaints about the clutch. I took my assist spring out, which helps a lot, but the thing is just inconsistent. When I beat on it, the engagement point moves up an inch, which completely screws me up with my muscle memory. When this thing is done, I’m replacing it with a McLeod.

As long as we’re sharing:

Kinja'd!!!

Wanna buy a set of Laguna Seca adjustable shocks? They’ve got 30k miles on ‘em but they’re in pretty good shape and I’ll cut you a good deal. I’ll even bring them as far as Riis Park.

I got the car back. After they rebuilt the transmission, I still found the problem when I picked up the car so after some fighting I made them replace the shifter. All is good right now... finally. as far as the shocks... Maybe. I’m not exactly in the market at the moment but I do have 60K on my stock struts.... so its really a matter of time and I have been eyeing those as possible replacements.. Does Kinja do private messages?

I’m glad you were able to get your car back together.

Unfortunately, kinja doesn’t. I’ll figure out a workaround. I have the full suspension up for 500 shipped, which includes assembled struts and rear springs. If you just want the struts, shocks and mounts, I’d be willing to do 320, but I’d be looking for the front springs back when you get everything disassembled.

Hey heeltoe, I just sent a friend request on SVTP but wanted to let you know I have to pass on the offer. It’s quite tempting but I have the more pressing matter of my pinion angle to fix first. I appreciate the offer. Username is Lava5.0

No problem. Good luck with the UCA. Pinion angle was actually what convinced me to get the springs I have now, just to avoid the issue at all.

Actually, can you give me more detail about your set-up? I lowered my car 3 years ago with Roush Lowering springs ~1” front 1.25” rear. I think its a bit more than that but whatever. Never noticed a problem until I installed LCAs and relocation brackets. Now I get a vibration at 90+ that I don’t like (who really likes vibrations at 90?) is 1.25” enough to screw the pinion angle? I have no issue buying the adjustable UCA, i’m just surprised I never felt it before (stiffer bushings from the LCA)

I’m very simple right now. Boss Front springs (148 lbs) and 55D rear springs (167 lbs - minimal drop), boss 25mm rear sway bar, Koni yellows, desperate need for a stiffer front sway bar, will be getting a bmr sb041 as soon as the Laguna Seca suspension sells.
